Unlike it’s considerable army of users, Wii Fit is sitting still. The game has just enjoyed its sixth week at the top of the software charts, seeing off contenders like Godfather 2 and Wolverine without breaking a sweat.

There are obvious reasons for its success. The Wii console remains ludicrously popular, of course, and most of the in-house titles have done well. On top of that, in Wii Fit Nintendo has a game that offers both the hilarity of the system’s novelty interface and, ostensibly, a means of getting fitter. This is the motherlode. Most people hate exercising but know they ought to do it, Wii Fit offers the prospect of working out and having fun - at the same time. And what’s more it’s all in the warmth and comfort of your own living room.

The question of whether it works or not, as with many products with supposed health benefits, is largely irrelevant. It’s all about perception; we want to feel like we’re doing something positive, and are prepared to be led into this illusion by marketers. Furthermore, there’s an understanding behind this transaction that while some of us make the purchase to get fit, what we really want to do is have a laugh pretending to sledge down a mountain.

The way in which Nintendo is building this relationship with its consumer is the interesting part.

This is the key thing. Wii Fit is being sold, primarily to women, not as a game, but as a health brand. The recent television adverts starring ex-pop star Louise Redknap, draw heavily on the techniques used to market products like low cholestoral diary spreads and pro-biotic yogurt drinks. There are documentary-style interview moments intercut with Louise using and enjoying the product. It’s all very naturalistic and chatty - we are encouraged to view Wii as the ultimate guilt-free consumer product: fun but healthy, indulgent, but also a benefit to the whole family. Someone in Nintendo’s marketing department knows the correct buttons to push for this demographic.

At the same time, Nintendo is getting out on the road, demo-ing the game at shopping malls and fitness centres - which, again, mimics the techniques for pushing food brands. There’s also a dedicated website, which is definitely not called wiifit.com, that’s far too unintuitive - it’s Feel Great Britain - and it’s filled with user testimonials and health tips from fitness experts.

This isn’t just about reaching a new audience - it’s more subtle and ambitious than that. In effect, Wii Fit has been removed from the traditional videogame marketing cycle. Every other release is treated like the launch of a new album or movie - a one-off event with a limited window of publicity potential. But here, the advertising emphasises personal choice and circumstances - “when you’ve had a year off from exercising, which a lot of pregnant women do, it’s a really easy way to get your fitness and confidence back,” says Louise.

In this way, the product is aligned to personal circumstances - it’s there when you need it. And vitally, it’s not just about physical fitness it’s about confidence. The pregnancy thing is smart too - it’s a time of personal re-evaluation and re-assessment, and to brands that represents an opportunity.

Wii Fit, then, is a world apart from every other game in the chart - not only because it’s hanging around more than a couple of weeks, but because it doesn’t obey the rules; doesn’t even know them. These are new rules. The question is, can any other game work the same angle?

Tip no. 1 - Ski Jump and higher and longer

Getting to 300 metres can be a difficult task but done the right it is quite easy.

You need to centre your balance on the blue dot for the ride down in order to maximize your speed. Then time your jump to begin as late as possible. If you jump immediately after entering the red zone jumps are much shorter, however if you wait too long, you will crash.

It does really matter if you are forward, backward or on the blue dot as long as you centre on the blue line. If you don;t bend your knees too much there is less fluctuation than when you straighten them out.

Tip no. 2 - Boxing clever

To get 300 on the rhythm boxing game you should really follow the on-screen tip and box to the beat. A bit like Joeboxers. Box on the beat and you will double the points you get. At the end of the game when you freestyle, keep one foot on the board and go for small movements to make as many punches count as possible.

This increases the score a lot towards the end of the bout.

Tip no. 3 - Put your best feet forward on the Slalom

When in the slalom game the best position to put your feet on the board is over the corners of the balance board. This is an ideal way for keeping the dot on the blue bar and help you go faster.

This also allows you to lean back on your heels to slow through the middle of the game. Small movements can help you traverse close-by gates.

Initially, going fast can mean missing everything. But practice makes perfect and you should be able to finish this in around 45 seconds.

Tip no. 4 - Walk the tightrope

When walking the tightrope, don’t lift your feet. Alternate each foot by placing one on tiptoes while the other stays flat and rock from side to side. Keep you upper body still as possible whilemoving your feet. Keep balanced before you jump over the teeth.

Tip no. 5 - Weigh yourself and other things besides.

When you stand on your Balance Board immediately after selecting Body Test, get hold of a heavy object. The Balance Board will sense that you are holding the object and will weigh it for you.

Tip no. 6 - Go jump off a mountain

When you are at the Island distance running game, when you first start running you will see a light-coloured dog pass you trainer. Run past your trainer and a “Follow the dog” message will appear.

Following the dog will see you go up a mountain, then across a wooden bridge. Next thing you know you jump off a mountain. Hope you packed a parachute!

Tip no. 7 - Try out the Ultimate Balance Test

After you have chosen your Mii to reach the statistics screen, there is a character on a treadmill in the background. You can choose him with your wiimote and this gets you onto the Ultimate Balance Test.

Tip no. 8 - Easy money

When on the Balance Mode Games menu, choose the Marble Drop Game. When playing the game let the time run out to fail the first challenge. Whether you win or lose you get one coin for everyminute of game play. The time spent failing the challenge is rounded up to the minute and so you get a coin. Press the A button and fail again to win.

Tip no. 9 - Win at Lotus Focus

If you really can’t be bothered to use the Wii Fit properly and you want to finish Lotus Focus, simply stick a heavy box on the balance board while you eat some crisps. The box will be doing the hard work while you just get fat.

Tip no. 10 - Running the dead easy way

Again if you don’t fancy running and, God forbid, breaking out into a sweat, then you can just shake the Wiimote instead of putting it in your pocket. You can use the other hand to eat a kebab with.

Guitar Hero World Tour marries Guitar Hero’s guitar gameplay, with a cooperative band experience that combines the most advanced wireless instruments with revolutionary new online and offline gameplay modes. The game features a slick newly redesigned guitar, a genuine electronic drum kit and a microphone, as well as an innovative Music Studio music creator that lets players compose, record, edit and share their own rock and roll anthems, along with online Band Career and 8-player “Battle of the Bands.” Guitar Hero World Tour is comprised entirely of master recordings from some of the greatest classic and modern rock bands of all-time including Ozzy Osbourne, Van Halen, Linkin Park, The Eagles, Sublime and many more. Additionally, the game offers significantly more localized downloadable music than ever before on all of the next-generation consoles.

Budding rock stars are also given creative license to fully customize everything from their characters’ appearance and instruments to their band’s logo and album covers. Featuring three drum pads, two raised cymbals and a bass kick pedal, the drum controller combines larger and quieter, velocity-sensitive drum heads with soft rubber construction to deliver authentic bounce back and is easy to set up, move, break down and store. Virtual musicians can live out their rock and roll fantasies by playing either a single instrument, or any combination of instruments, in addition to the full band experience. Guitar Hero World Tour introduces Battle of the Bands mode which allows eight players to join online and challenge each other band-to-band to determine who is the best of the best. In the Band modes, up to four players can jam together, online or off, as they progress through the game, and in single-player Career Mode, players can jam on any of the instruments in branching venue progression enabling them to rock out in the order of their choice. The game’s Music Studio lets players express their musical creativity by giving them access to a full compliment of tools to create digital music from scratch, utilizing all of the instruments, and then play their compositions in the game. Music creators can share their recordings with their friends online through GHTunes where other gamers can download their unique compositions and play them.

Let’s see, we’ve had SimCity, SimEarth, SimAnt, SimLife, SimFarm, SimTower, SimSafari, and a bunch more Sim games over the years. So what’s next? If you guessed SimContrabass Quartet, SimSylvester Stallone, or SimCrime of Passion you are incorrect. However, if you happened to say “Sim Animals” then take a moment to shake your own hand, sir or madam, because you are correct! The game, which was the first shown during last years EA E3 press conference looks to continue the remarkable success of the life-emulating series with a game devoted entirely to the animal world.

The world of Sim Animals will be, obviously, inhabited by furry creatures everywhere, and, as producers pointed out during the demo, some of them will be friendly, whereas others…not so much. During the trailer shown for the game, i was introduced to an adorable bear cub that was hanging out with his mom and dad. Soon, the cub met a friendly squirrel and the two started to frolic, like fake animals of entirely different species tend to do. Interrupting all the fun was a wicked-looking fox who looked an order of magnitude scarier than any fox we’ve ever seen.

Pretty soon, the fox was hassling the bear cub and the squirrel, which was where i got to see a hint of how Sim Animals will play. Like many EA games shown off during today’s press conference, the heads-up display elements in Sim Animals are minimal. However, you will have control over the world. In the demo example, the “player” used the in-game hand tool (which you’ll likely control with the Wii Remote or DS stylus) to remove a tree to give the bear cub an escape route from the fox. When the fox foiled, the cub and the squirrel were reunited, so it was time for more frolicking. Wheeee.

With a clean AI and simple-to-learn play style, Sim Animals looks to be a family-friendly game that will appeal to animal lovers. The game is due for release in this month (January) on the Nintendo Wii and DS. We’ll have more on the game as we follow its progress.

Nintendo is to launch a television channel which is accessed through its Wii games console.

It will deliver video-on-demand to millions of households that have the device and an internet connection.

The plan is to generate more of its revenues from content - and the advertising that goes with it.

The service will be begin in Japan this spring but could be rolled out globally by the end of the year.

Some 40 million households throughout the world have a Wii and almost half (18m) are connected to the internet.

Broadcasts will be made exclusively for the Nintendo channel and will include cartoons, cookery programmes, brain-training quizzes and lifestyle shows.

Most of the content will be free but Nintendo could make some programmes pay-per-view.

Customers would be able to pay through the existing Wii Point payment system, that can already be used to pay for access to some games.

Japanese television executives are thought to be worried about the possibility of the Wii becoming, as one called it, “the centre-piece of the living room”.

Such a development would be “the stuff of television producers’ nightmares”, an executive at Fuji Television, Japan’s biggest commercial broadcaster, told The Times.

About 3.5m of the £180 Wii units have been sold in Britain, making it one of the most popular games consoles on the market.
